Bank of Spain Madrid was first build according the design of architects Sainz de la Lastra and Eduardo de Adaro, commissioned after studying the buildings of other European banks. 1883 the Final project was approved. The first stone was laid on July 4, 1884, and the monumental building was inaugurated in 1891.

The Cibeles Room has a great importance from the origin of the building, usual access at the point of confluence of Calle Alcalá and Pº del Prado, until the beginning of the nineties. Access through chamfer smelting gate is made by two exclusives that open on the sides of the atrium and connect with the side adjoining rooms, since access from the street is not direct to the room, but forms a lobby.

The main area is a high-rise room in which the columns stand out, which is flanked symmetrically by two adjoining rooms that also give Alcalá and Pº del Prado respectively, which expand the space of the central hall to be communicated through broad steps.

The Chamber was renovated in 1992, with the project written by Angela Garcia de Paredes and Ignacio Pedrosa.

In 2018 Bank of Spain commissioned Marta Pelegrin and MEDIOMUNDO arquitectos to lead the Final Design and Building Permits Technical Design for the rehabilitation and retrofitting of Sala Cibeles, C / Alcalá, 48. Paseo del Prado. Madrid. It consist in the Technical development Fit-out works & Shop drawings management, for the retrofitting of the Sala Cibeles to hold the Bank of Spain Art Collection, the premier exhibition “Goya and the Origin of the Bank of Spain Collection” , and to fit it for all possible future exhibitions. This project proposes to recover and optimize the operation of the facilities of lighting, security, detection, signalling, alarm and fire extinguishing elements and existing air conditioning.

Marta Pelegrín & MEDIOMUNDO arquitectos  have been Commissioned Final Design & Technical Development of fit-out works, advisors and supplier’s management, as well as onsite construction quality surveillance coordination, for the exhibition on Audio Contemporary Social Art curated by Francisco López Reina Sofía National Art Center Museum: April – September 2020, in in the 3rd floor Sabatini Building Reina Sofia Exhibition galleries.

“The objective of this exhibition is to present to the public interested in contemporary art not only a plethora of unknown audio-artists (many of whom have extensive careers spanning decades), but also – and crucially – contents and experiences for a broad reflection on a monumental social process of artistic change in the field of sound creation.

This exhibition also aims to cover a historical and cultural vacuum in the recognition, exhibition and analysis of a essential part of the changes in the artistic conception of work Creative with sound. This poor representation is largely due to the persistence of classic paradigms – significant but overwhelming – stories as the “pioneers”, the “avant-garde”, the linear-chronological (or monophyletic) and, in the specific case of contemporary art, naturally also the Prevalence of the visual and the objectual. This exhibition will therefore present a critical and constructive reconsideration of these paradigms and their effects in the understanding and practice of creative artistic work with sound.

Description

In 2007 MEDIOMUNDO arquitectos won third prize in a competition launched by the University of Granada to design their Health Sciences Campus in Granada. The prize was the commission to design one component of the project: the design of the Health Sciences Faculty.

Located on the new Health Sciences Campus in Granada, the MEDIOMUNDO arquitectos design of the Health Sciences Faculty aimed to construct a building that would act as a connecting point or nexus for different scales, dynamics or landscapes located between the urban and metropolitan territory. The urban norms and regulations for this area determined that faculty buildings must be made up of three floors measuring 130 m in length and 19 m wide, rounded off by an eight-floor tower measuring 40 m by 19 m. Is it possible to convert this determinism into a positive variable?

Connected to areas of high urban mobility and accessibility, the Health Sciences Faculty needed to incorporate entrances on either end in order to channel the flow of people moving in and out of the campus to and from the urban surroundings.

Because of this we designed a building that offers different scales of perception, permeability, density, continuity and fragmentation. In order to comply with bioclimatic parameters in each sector of the building, our plan includes several open spaces and terraces that favour an interior-exterior relationship. In our design, the roof is transformed into a sunny recreational area with landscaped gardens.

In 2002 MEDIOMUNDO arquitectos won the comission to design a movie theatre in Vejer de la Frontera after taking part in a competition launched by the Junta de Andalucía. The project was completed in 2009. The bried involved rehabilitation an existing but practically obsolete cinema in an old warehouse to convert it into a theatre and cinema.

How can one recover and reactivate an area with an exceptionally beautiful urban landscape and rich cultural heritage? We decided to renovate the existing facilities and proposed a process to recover the historical and sociocultural surroundings of the building itself. While the original cinema existed with its back to the urban setting, the new movie theatre opens onto the street in dialogue with its surroundings.

The project brings together the urban conditions surrounding it. In it we proposed a building whose materials and traditional construction methods work in tandem with sophisticated theatrical and scenic technology to form pary of a new skyline that functions in direct relation with the architecture of Vejer.

The creation of a functional scenic space necesitates the construction of a voluminous building to house all the facilities required. In this case the movie theatre stands out amongst its domestic surroundings. Its construction created a new point of reference in the existing skyline, as well as providing a place from which to look out at the town and surrounding landscape.

The previous structure was separated from the exterior with thick walls that housed a huge empty space (cinema screen and seating area) surrounded by a corridor that gave access to the amenities.

The movie theatre opens out onto the street via a double-height lobby along the façade. The two floors are connected with a naturally lit central staircase via laylights.

While the previous cinema had one level of seating, the new movie theatre multiplies the seating by locating stalls on two floors. On the ground floor the projection booth divides the two main entrances to the theatre. Visitors are invite to their seats while their gaze is drawn to the distinctive black box that is the stage.

The changing rooms, actors toilets and service entrance are located at stage height on both sides of the movie theatre. On the upper level are located the administrative offices.

“A connecting point, a meeting point”

>> AIM OF THE RESEARCH IN ARCHITECTURE :

We are interested in investigating the formation of a physical space which, devoted to virtual connexions and information, becomes a real ‘meeting point’.  We want to propose through architecture the merging of ‘sites’ for both virtual and material social networks.

Information Technology has re-configured the social relations of human beings. Information has opened up communication spaces, and has given depth and quality to our limited daily time.

Which meeting places of these intangible spaces can be designed from the tangible production of architecture?

Spaces that might be considered part of the “future”, are already common places in the present. We enjoy and share these in our homes and workplaces, where we spend our leisure and free times. These are spaces that re-invent the relationship between collective and private spaces, formation and information, communication and dialogue.

Only on few occasions has architecture proposed a setting in which information and space can interact.  Sometimes attention to new information technologies has wandered between metaphoric formal exercises and pixelized communication prosthesis. The superimposition of matter and technology to incorporate these flows has created a complexity in buildings that sclerosises it. This generates an unavoidable obsolescence that underlines it contemporary condition.

This is the reason why our research is centered around architecture as the medium for multitude programmes, functions and timings: that means, being a programmable ‘hardware’. We are investigating how to propose a ‘pluripotential’ (or multipotential) space, where the flows of users and visitors may enter and where citizens may interact among others. That is architecture that holds active social ‘software’.

We propose to do less architecture to allow more ‘gathering events’ to happen: a principle of basic ecology that makes integral sustainability possible as a constructive, economical and social objective.

All social centres are more than a just a place, they are a process where new neighbourhood forms are articulated with ‘agents’ and ‘places’ that are nearby but also with others that are geographic and culturally more remote.

The new Social Cyber Centre Macarena Tres Huertas is a place where such categories as collective/intimate and informational/educative spaces will be re-defined.

We think in such places ‘presence’ (citizenry) is more important than ‘permanency’ (buildings), where architecture, in this world of networks and meeting places, is a phenomena in transit. That is why the building is carefully set in its surroundings, put to the residents’ disposition.

>> DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT.

The Social Cyber Centre Macarena Tres Huertas competition was organized within the process’ frame by administrative decentralization and progressive establishment of the so called ‘tele-administration’. Off which the city government (EMVISESA) firmly aims to make available its advantages to all citizens. This implicitly demanded a new spatial medium to provide the local inhabitants with the necessary equipment for computing and information technologies.

Chance, necessity and environmental adaptation.

Almost as it happened with Darwing’s evolution theory, chance and necessity converged (the demands of City Government and our research) interceded by local determinations: the surrounding characteristics and the restrained economic conditions.

The district Macarena Tres Huertas is characterized by its high density (eight-floor buildings) dwellings blocks supported by pilotis that leave open spaces on the ground floor. This allows for visual transparency and free circulation among the gardens, thus avoiding its perception as an opaque and stagnant space.

Therefore the new ‘Macarena Social – CyberCentre’ sits in this place, generating visual and physical movement in order to optimize the accessibility to the surroundings paths and open areas.

The ground floor is freed from the programme in order to create a wi-fi plaza below the building. A small access garden, which together with a porch linked to a cafeteria and a multipurpose room, are offered as a neighbourhood wi-fi meeting and leisure room. Over these spaces, arises a volume lined with red lacquered sheets, where computer labs, workshops and offices are placed.

 >> N-POTENTIAL PUBLIC SPACE:

The main idea is to raise to the power of three the former free spaces now occupied by the building by means of multiplying n-times the tangible spaces: garden-wi-fi plaza, multipurpose and connected spaces on the 1st floor and the flat roof, which is offered to the neighbours as a terrace to hold events and as river viewing point.

>> PROGAMABLE BUILDING

The new ‘Macarena Social – CyberCentre’ is designed as a programmable setting, where functional definition will depend on the timing of its uses and the users participation with the given spaces. Only by thinking in these terms, has a functional determination been avoided, that could damage the survival and natural evolution of these spaces.

The requirements that were initially demanded (administration, services and installations) have been raised up and compacted into a nucleus on the first floor. This allows the rest of the space to be free with flexible rooms equipped with computer connections. On the ground floor, the garden and the porch leads us to the entrance, a multipurpose room and a small cafeteria, in a close relation with the wi-fi plaza. Above it all, the terrace is offered as a motivation for activities and celebrations.

>> MATERIALS

The new building offers a simple but straightforward image.

Its materials are sincere, so it has a very important significance: red-lacked, fold up steel sheet over thermal insulation and brick wall, leaving a ventilated area for climate control.  The steel sheet has different perforation densities that allow different levels of privacy and security. A range of intimacy is achieved by managing the ‘gills’ over the windows (vertical lama or banderols that make the building breath), these are orientated to free spaces, preserving the windows and views to the dwellings’ privacy.

The building itself is a statement on sustainability in terms of standardised construction, organized by structural units and a standard module, made by a serial production process. This as well as controlled transport and executing time benefits the energy and emission control.  The building follows passive construction on order to rationally deal with the extreme weather of Seville: making the most of thick isolation, natural ventilation and natural lightning.

Socially the – CyberCentre ‘Macarena Tres Huertas’ is a site where traditional categories meet and are re-defined: an advanced technological site, environmentally conscious, urbanely responsible and socially active.
